Year-round orchids

Looking for a houseplant that’s low effort but seriously high impact? Meet the orchid—your new interior obsession. With sculptural stems and vibrant, long-lasting blooms, orchids bring instant luxury to your space. And the best part? They’re way easier to care for than you might think.

At Elmwood Nursery & Garden Centre in Emersons Green, we stock a stylish selection of orchids that bloom for months on end. Whether you're into the classic beauty of Phalaenopsis (moth orchids), the bold drama of Cymbidium, or the intricate patterns of Odontoglossum, there’s something here to suit your space.

Not Just a One-Bloom Wonder

Many people don’t realise this, but with the right care, orchids will flower again and again—not just once.

Here’s how to keep yours in bloom:

  • Light: Bright but indirect light is key. Avoid direct sun—it’s too harsh. Think of mimicking their natural home halfway up rainforest trees: dappled light and warm air.
  • Humidity: Orchids love moisture in the air. If your home’s dry, give them a little mist or place them near a humidity tray (you’ll find these at our garden centre).
  • Watering: Once a week is usually enough. Let the water run through and fully drain—no soggy roots allowed.
  • Feeding: Use specialist orchid feed every couple of weeks to keep flowers coming. We stock all the right products at Elmwood.

Pro-Level Orchid Tips

  • For Phalaenopsis, once the blooms drop, trim the stem just above the highest node (that little bump). This encourages new flowers without waiting for a whole new stem.
  • For Cymbidium and Odontoglossum, snip the flower spike off completely after blooming to make way for new growth.

Orchids aren’t just beautiful—they’re long-term statement plants that thrive with just a little know-how. Whether you're decorating your flat, styling your shelf, or gifting something elegant, an orchid is always a good idea.
