Herbs for containers

Short on space? No problem. Growing herbs in containers is one of the easiest – and most rewarding – ways to bring greenery into your life. Whether you’ve got a sunny windowsill, a balcony, or just a doorstep, potted herbs fit right in. They love the drier, free-draining conditions that pots provide and will reward you with scent, flavour and beauty all season long.

You’ll find a wide range of herbs at Elmwood Nursery & Garden Centre in Emersons Green. Here are five favourites that thrive in pots:

  • Rosemary
Bold and architectural, rosemary deserves a pot of its own. Use a soil-based compost like John Innes No. 3 to give this woody Mediterranean herb the nutrients it needs. Bonus: it looks great all year round.

  • Mint
A container is the best way to grow mint—it’s deliciously fragrant but can take over your garden if left unchecked. Choose from quirky varieties like fuzzy apple mint or the luxurious chocolate peppermint with its deep purple stems.

  • Coriander
This fresh herb is perfect for sowing in batches. Fill long troughs and stagger sowings every few weeks to keep the harvest going. Great for quick garnishes and bold flavour in your cooking.

  • Chives
Easygoing and compact, chives grow well in generous clumps. Snip leaves straight into salads or soups, and enjoy the surprise of edible pink flowers when they bloom.

  • Basil
Tender and aromatic, basil thrives in containers—especially when it’s out of reach of slugs. Choose from classic green or dramatic purple varieties, keep it well watered, and harvest regularly to encourage new leaves.
